On Tuesday, President Droupadi Murmu released three significant publications of the Supreme Court on the occasion of 75 years of the court, prisons in India and legal aid. The event saw the participation of dignitaries, including Chief Justice-designate Sanjiv Khanna, Supreme Court Justice B.R. Gavai, and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal.
On the release of these books, Chief Justice of India, D.Y Chandrachaud, highlighted that these three books serve as moments of self-reflection for Supreme Court and the larger legal system. He reflected that “For any institution, the pursuit of excellence necessitates the deliberate act of self-reflection. As part of this process, we must carefully assess our past and present and use what we extract to inform our actions in the future”.
The publications released by President Murmu are titled: "Justice for Nation: Reflections on 75 years of the Supreme Court of India", "Prisons in India: Mapping Prison Manuals and Measures for Reformation and Decongestion," and "Legal Aid Through Law Schools: A Report on the Working of Legal Aid Cells in India." President Murmu expressed her appreciation for the Supreme Court's jurisprudence, noting that it is firmly rooted in India's ethos and realities. She was particularly pleased with the publication "Justice for Nation," which highlights significant moments in the Supreme Court's 75-year journey and its impact on various aspects of Indian society.
